Feb. 11-Feb. 22

I hope everyone has been staying warm these last few weeks! This has sure been some crazy winter weather.

Language Arts
We are continuing to work on our narrative writing rough drafts. We will also be discussing the appropriate use of dialogue in our stories, and working to create correct punctuation when using dialogue.

Our vocabulary and spelling words are taken from the current science unit.

Book Talks, RAH, Six Flags Reading
The students did a great job on the their December/January book talks. I have seen a lot of growth since the beginning of the year! The genre for February is realistic fiction. Realistic fiction is a genre consisting of stories that could have actually occurred to people in a believable setting. These stories resemble real life, and fictional characters within these stories react similarly to real people. Students should have started reading their book by this time. Don't forget to fill out the RAH calendars, total the minutes (should be at least 100 minutes a week), and sign the calendar. The due date for both RAH and Book Talks is February 28. Don't forget that RAH minutes also count toward Six Flags Great America Reading. This is due on February 20th. Thank you so much!

Math

We have started Unit 5, Fractions and Mixed Numbers Computation and Measurement.
The concept of fractions can be challenging but your child will make great progress.
We appreciate your support at home while working through the home links. Remember, this
website is a wonderful resource for home links, explanations and other materials you or your
child may need at home:

Please keep plugging away at Reflex Math (if your child hasn't achieved 100% fluency yet).  This is very important for their math progress moving forward.

Science

During the next several weeks, we will spend time analyzing the Earth's
changing land (through weathering, erosion and deposition). Students will have various
assessments and projects throughout this unit. One of those projects will require trays of Jello.
We are asking for help from a couple of parent volunteers from each class to make a tray of Jello
(jello and tray will be provided). Please contact your child's homeroom teacher if you would be
willing to help. Thank you!

Social Emotional Learning

For the next few weeks, we will focus on conversations and compliments. You can learn more about our SEL program, Second Step, entering the activation key SSP4 FAMI LY74 to watch videos about the Second Step program and get more information about what your child is learning on www.secondstep.org.

Valentine's Day

In lieu of a PTO sponsored party this year, I will be hosting a variety of activities to
celebrate this special day. One of those activities is passing out Valentine's Day cards to our classmates.
Students should also bring their own box or bag to collect cards. If your child passes out cards, EVERYONE
in class must receive a card. Another activity is our first Fourth Grade Valentine's Day Cupid Gift Exchange.
See the flyer below (a hard copy was sent home earlier last week) for more details.

Spring Conferences

Student-led conferences are Wednesday, February 20th.  If you forgot your time, please click on signupgenius
for a reminder.   Remember, that your child must be there, as he or she is leading the conference.
With your child, you will look at the portfolio, play a math game and participate in a fun science activity.
We hope you enjoy this time with your child. We will have multiple families in at a time.
