April 23-May 3

4/23-5/3

It feels like Spring is finally here! I hope you were able to enjoy some sunshine and fresh air this long weekend! Happy Easter/Happy Passover to all!

If you would like your child to receive a free summer skills packet, please be sure you return the form that was sent home a week ago. Orders are due this Friday!

Language Arts

Our next lesson will once again cover words related to our Social Studies curriculum (Revolutionary War). The test will be in 2 weeks on May 3, 2019. Meaningful sentences and spelling city activities will also be due on May 3.  Here is the list for your reference:

Our next focus skill will be determining the main idea and identifying supporting details. The main idea is the most important or central thought of a passage. Supporting details clarify, explain, and describe the main idea of a passage.

We will transfer this skill into our non-fiction mini writing projects as well. Students will pick a topic they are interested in and will research details to support their topics.  Over the next two weeks we will create our paragraphs.

Book Talks
The students will be completing and presenting their ‘no notes’ book talk on April 30. The genre is biography and specific directions were given to students in class. The students will be completing the graphic organizer, however to present, they are only allowed to use a slideshow with pictures only. No words/notes are allowed. We are extending the time limit 3-4 minutes this time. Please let me know if you have any questions. This is the last formal book talk, as the final reading project will mostly be done in school (poetry project). I am very excited to see the no notes Booktalk presentations! Thank you for your continued support with the Booktalks!
Feel free to go here or here for further explanations.   Rubric is also helpful in knowing how your child will be graded.

Social Studies
We are continuing to learn about the Revolutionary War.  We are just wrapping up our study of Famous Loyalists and Patriots and will present our research to the class. Looking ahead, in Chapter 12, we will learn about The Declaration of Independence. In Chapter 13, we will learn about some of the battles that took place during the Revolutionary War, tactics that were used during the war, and The Treaty of Paris. Finally, we will end our 4th grade social studies curriculum with the United States Constitution and how the government was established. **We will pick up Science again in May.

Math
We continue Unit 7 in Math which focuses on multiplying fractions. The students are learning how to multiply fractions in word problems by using pictures, equations, and repeated addition. Students will also focus on multi-step division problems and identifying patterns. Here is the link if your child forgets his/her homelink of math homework: Everyday Math Unit 7

SELIn Lesson 14 our topic is avoiding jumping to conclusions. Often times, many students make a hasty judgment before learning or considering all the facts. In these lessons we will role-play, emphasize the importance of evidence, and discuss that mistakes happen.
